A new season, a new garden

A garden tomato from summer 2010
MCC Nepal recently moved into a real office, hired new staff and allowed me to come hang out in the office two days each week. There's a great porch that gets a lot of sun so now that we're thawing out from a cold winter, I decided to get a new garden going. I think that it has something to do with working on a food security project or the class that I took in college that helped me think about where my food comes from and what my faith has to do with my food but if I'm honest, the real reason that I wanted to start a garden in Kathmandu because I miss our garden in Pittsburgh and the strange tomatoes that it produces.

Soil solarization in Morang

I usually feel confident shopping for things that I need but finding simple things like a saw (borrowed from my boss) or a piece of plastic (purchased at the plastic store (what??)) proved to be more challenging than I expected. It was a frustrating project to get it all together but reminded me that things always take longer than you expect.

It's small and I haven't started planting anything yet. I recently went to the hills of Morang to check on the project there and learned about soil solarization so that's where we are now. My plan is to leave the plastic on for another week and then get some herbs, tomatoes and beans in for a harvest before the monsoon rains come.
